Zafran

Zafran (زعفران), known as Saffron in English, is a rare and luxurious spice made from the dried stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower. In Urdu, the plant is called “پودا زعفران” (Podah-e-Zafran), and the zafran threads are known as (Zafran). Because each flower produces only 3 delicate red threads (stigmas), and harvesting is done by hand, zafran is often referred to as “Red Gold.”

Zafran (Saffron) is mainly produced in countries like Iran, which is the largest producer globally, followed by India (particularly Kashmir), Afghanistan, Spain, and Morocco. It thrives in cool, dry climates with well-drained soil, making high-altitude and temperate regions ideal for cultivation.

Types of Zafran

  1. Super Negin – Highest quality, long red stigmas.
  2. Negin – High-quality but slightly shorter threads.
  3. Sargol – Only the red tips, very pure and fragrant.
  4. Pushal – Red stigmas with yellow threads, affordable.
  5. Bunch – Complete thread with red and yellow parts; lowest grade.
