Cumin Seeds
Cumin seeds are also known as Zeera or Jeera in Urdu and Hindi, are basically dried seeds of the plant Cuminum Cyminum. They’re used globally as a spice for their distinct, warm, earthy, and slightly bitter flavor. Cumin seeds are widely available in India, Egypt, Iran, and Mexico.
Uses
In Pakistan, the cumins or Zeera are mostly used in curries, dals, biryanis, and different types of chutneys. It is also used in Mexican foods like chili, tacos, and beans. In the Middle East, it is normally used in Kebabs, Falafel, and Hummus.
Types
There are 4 types of Cumin seeds or Zeera
White Cumin (Most common) plae brown used in indian and Pakistani foods like dal chawal, curries, etc.
Black Cumin(Nigella Sativa)is often confused, technically not cumin, it is called Kalonji
Shahi Jeera (Bunium persicum), also called black cumin in South Asia, is thinner, darker more aromatic.
Green Cumin. It is a very rare version of cumin seeds; it could be fresh and less pungent.
